The summer of 2020 was a crucible, a time of raw emotion and a desperate cry for change. At the heart of it all was the tragic death of George Floyd, a moment that ignited a global movement. Amidst the protests and calls for justice, a powerful song emerged: “8:46” by Hannah Eggen, a haunting and visceral response to the unfathomable.
The title itself is a stark reminder, a direct reference to the agonizing eight minutes and forty-six seconds that Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck. This time, etched into the collective consciousness, became a symbol of systemic racism and police brutality.
Hannah Eggen, a singer-songwriter from Bermuda, lent her voice to this raw pain, crafting a song that resonated with millions. But she didn’t do it alone. The song’s production and co-writing were helmed by the legendary Wyclef Jean, whose musical prowess and social consciousness brought a depth and weight to the track.
“8:46” isn’t just a song; it’s a testament. It’s a sonic representation of the grief, anger, and frustration that gripped the world. Eggen’s vocals, filled with emotion, convey the sheer weight of the moment. The lyrics don’t shy away from the harsh realities of racial injustice, confronting the listener with the brutal truth of what happened.
“8:46” stands as a powerful artifact of a pivotal moment in history. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and the enduring power of music to amplify voices and spark change. It’s a song that forces us to confront uncomfortable truths, to reflect on our society, and to demand a better future.
The song’s production, courtesy of Wyclef Jean, is equally impactful. It creates a somber and reflective atmosphere, allowing the message to take center stage. The simplicity of the arrangement amplifies the emotional power of Eggen’s voice, making the song a poignant and unforgettable experience.

AFTER AN INTENSE STORM PUMMELED Bermuda in February 2011, the island’s custodian of historic wrecks Philippe Max Rouja went to do a coastal survey and spotted a partially exposed bow of a boat. The bow belonged to the Civil War blockade runner Mary Celestia, which was en route to North Carolina’s Confederate forces when it sank in 1864.

The Mary Celestia is far from alone: Bermuda’s treacherous underwater reefs sank many a ship. In fact, over 300 vessels are buried around the island, each with its own history and artifacts. But this isn’t the story of the wreck itself—this is a story about a whiff of lost perfume history hiding within.
After a week of examining the wreck, a team of divers and archaeologists found a number of artifacts, including shoes, wine, and two small bottles of perfume. The items were packed together, leading the team to think they may have been gifts. Save for some mineral deposits that had formed on them, the bottles appeared to be intact. One still contained a small air bubble inside, which otherwise would have been forced out by seawater. Etched on the glass were the names “Piesse and Lubin London.”

Rouja brought the bottles to Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, the owner of a local boutique perfume store called Lili Bermuda. Ramsay-Brackstone immediately knew they were a rare find. “In the 1800s, London was a …
Today, the Minister of Community Affairs and Sports, the Hon. Lovitta Foggo, JP, MP, provided an update regarding the Bermuda Day Parade and the 2020 Bermuda Half Marathon.
Minister Foggo said today, “Heritage Month and its associated activities have always served as a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a Country to celebrate our unique history and traditions. And most will agree that the jewel in the crown of Heritage Month is Bermuda Day and the Bermuda Day Parade. This event with its vibrancy, music, pageantry and energy along with the Bermuda Half Marathon are important events that unify us and instill in us joy and pride on our National holiday.
“We recognize that these are quintessential cultural events that our families, our young people, our seniors, our visitors and all our residents look forward to with great anticipation each year.
“Regrettably against the backdrop of the COVID-19 global pandemic – we simply cannot proceed with hosting the Bermuda Day Parade this year. Nor can we proceed with having the Bermuda Half Marathon.
“The safety, health and wellbeing of all of Bermuda’s citizens is this Government’s number one priority. Out of an overwhelming abundance of caution, and following the guidance and recommendations of our health professionals, the Ministry of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports has made the very difficult decision to cancel these events this year.
“I wish to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to those on our organising committee in the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and to all those who were planning to participate in the planned Heritage Month events, including the Bermuda Day Parade and the Half Marathon. We know this is a disappointing development, but keeping our residents safe and saving lives must be our Country’s sole aim.”
Minister Foggo notes that as we approach May, there will be programming provided on the Government television station of past Heritage Month events and activities including the Bermuda Day Parade so that residents can observe the occasion. The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will also be seeking ways to symbolically recognize Heritage Month.
In 1615 or 1616, coins were introduced in Bermuda. Although Bermuda was then called the Sommer Islands, for clarity, it is best to refer here to this place as Bermuda, as continual references to “Sommer Islands” would be distracting. Bermuda was then and still is a British colony. It is thus unsurprising that the first coins of Bermuda were denominated in British units: Twopence, Threepence, Sixpence and Twelvepence. These are the same denominations as the coins of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which were issued later in the same century. Twelvepence equaled one shilling and Twelvepence coins are typically termed Shillings.
Coins of all four denominations are undated; there is no indication on these coins of the year during which they were struck. Historical records suggest that they were struck in 1615 and/or 1616. Although it is likely that they were struck in England to be brought to Bermuda, it is plausible that some or all these coins were actually struck in Bermuda.

An ongoing project in midi integrated pedals to form a portable version of the famous Line6 Dream Rig. This video was done some 3 months after the fledgling creation of a facebook group for MIDI and the Helix family of guitar processors. Check out The Line6 Midi Mad Scientist Club … Here we have a general talk about the state of MIDI control today and a quick run through all the pedals that so far are making up this little dream rig project. The idea is to shrink the massive Line6 Dream Rig concept from presenters like Paul Hindmarsh and Sean Halley into something which you could travel with. If you’ve never seen a Variax guitar, go check those out. The idea is one guitar can do many guitars and many tunings. This system that I’m putting together is working to do something similar but for any guitar. Specialized for travel. 1 guitar, becomes many, along with many amps and effects and ways of being output. A system that learns with you and keeps your research organized so your search for Tone moves forward. Hope you enjoy this and the concepts presented. A.B
Pretty much a staging ground for testing I’m doing as the Line6 Midi Mad Scientist Club, also content dedicated to The Strymon Iridium Owners Club and the WAZA Air Owners Club. All good groups for ideas and assistance with your pedalboard and overall workflow – A.B
