A transnational, pan-African youth movement, Black Power in Bermuda sought freedom for Blacks from the island’s White oligarchy and independence from British colonialism. It was spearheaded by activists such as Pauulu Kamarakafego and the Black Beret Cadre. The Cadre maintained relationships with revolutionary organizations across the African Diaspora, such as the Black Panthers. Emerging in the late 1960s, the Movement witnessed the assassinations of Bermuda’s British Chief of Police and Governor (1972-1973). Swan carefully details the island’s colonial government’s attempts to destroy the Movement through military tactics, extensive propaganda, and the implementation of token social concessions.

Eastern Blue Cut #Bermuda

Sunday afternoon in November in Bermuda at Eastern Blue Cut on the northern edge of the Bermuda platform where the water is still around 70 feet or less deep some five miles north of Dockyard in Somerset. The water is mirror-calm, warm enough to swim in without a wet suit and the top of the beacon provides a bird’s eye view of the surrounding coral reefs in crystal clear waters.

This is the story of Peter Sagos’ Bermuda Vacation. He was arrested and accused of plotting to import $33 million worth of cannabis into the island and was given “a year-long jail term after admitting to lesser charges.”

His blog recounting the story lays down heavy accusations towards the Bermuda Police Service, the Bermuda Criminal Justice System and mainstream newspapers.

“I went down to open up a bank account and to trade stocks offshore, this was also for future tax gains,” Mr. Sagos says.

Little did he know that once he stepped foot on the tropical paradise, his life would become a living nightmare. He was accused of importing $34 million worth of marijuana, and the Bermuda Police Service was trying to link his case with three other foreign nationals who were arrested on conspiracy charges.

Peter Sagos spent 10 ½ months in a Bermuda jail not knowing whether he would ever again see family and friends.

Sacha Blackburne – Heather Nova “The Way It Feels” Photo Shoot @nova_says

“I was honored to have been able to capture the images for Heather Nova’s latest album, The Way it Feels. I was lucky enough to have also shot the art for the last two albums as well, but I have to say, I never take it for granted that I will photograph her again as Heather is constantly reinventing herself and a fresh perspective is always important. This time, I knew she was going with a very cool designer, Tarik Mikou, for the album cover and booklet art, and when he sent her his ideas for the type of photography he was looking for, we didn’t know if my shooting style would fit the bill. He was looking for edgey, and I tend to lean more towards dreamy if I had to pigeon hole myself. So I asked Heather if we could do an experimental shoot first, to see if we could even get close to making Tarik’s vision a reality. When we sent him the unedited shots from that shoot, he was thrilled so we did another session, this time with hair and make up. I love trying new things and Heather is so easy to work with that it was just a blast playing with shadows and light to get some cool shots. Heather is the perfect muse. And I am so honoured to have been given the chance once again to capture her in a way that can hopefully complement her music.”
