Clinark is a reggae and R&B singer-songwriter, musician, and producer.
Biography
Clinark (Clinarke Dill), born in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, is an accomplished reggae artist. His musical journey began in Bermuda, where he gained experience performing with several local bands. These included:
- Youth Creation (1984-1990): This marked Dill’s initial foray into the music scene.
- Studio Six (1990-1993): He continued to hone his skills and expand his musical repertoire.
- Jahstice (1994-1999): This band further solidified his foundation in reggae music.
For his debut solo single, “Dem Come” (2004), Dill briefly performed under the name “Dill-in-Jah.” He later relocated to Edmonton, London, England, where he currently resides.
In 2006, Clinark released his first album, “Clinark Live in Holland with Poor Man Friend Band.” This live recording captured his performance energy and showcased his developing style. He then focused on writing original material, exploring themes of culture, social commentary, ballads, and lovers rock. This led to his debut studio album, “Journey to Foreign” (2008), which was later followed by a Deluxe Dub Album (2011).
“Journey to Foreign” was a significant step in Clinark’s career. Recorded at Stingray Studios in London, he collaborated with renowned producers Mafia & Fluxy, guitarist Stanley Andrew, and the Matic Horns. The 20-track album featured collaborations with prominent reggae artists, including Maxi Priest on the song “Better Tomorrow,” which received a nomination for “Song of the Year” in 2009. Other notable collaborations on this album included Richie Spice, Luciano, Kofi, Brinsley Forde (of Aswad), and Gramps and Peetah Morgan (of Morgan Heritage).
In June 2009, Clinark released a reggae rendition of the Jackson 5 classic, “I’ll Be There,” just four days before Michael Jackson’s untimely death. Deeply affected by Jackson’s passing, Clinark released another single, “Smile” (2009), recorded at Blue Pro Studios in London. Public demand encouraged him to create a full tribute album, resulting in “A Tribute to Michael Jackson – A Legend and a Warrior” (2010). This 18-track album featured reggae interpretations of Jackson’s songs, incorporating what Clinark described as a “Reggae Twist,” along with two acoustic mixes. Both “Journey to Foreign” and “A Tribute to Michael Jackson” received nominations for Best British Album at the British Reggae Industry Awards (BRIA).
In 2012, Clinark released the self-penned conscious reggae single “Babylon City,” inspired by the UK summer riots. This track was produced by House of Riddim in Austria and at Blue Pro Studios. He also released the EP “They Don’t Care About Us – A Tribute to Michael Jackson (Remix).” Continuing to honor Jackson’s legacy, Clinark released the original song “Happy Birthday MJ” in August 2013 as a commemoration.
Further demonstrating his versatility, Clinark collaborated with Songweavers on “Ray of Hope” for the 4th International Charity CD (International Peace Project) in September 2013. This project featured lyrics by Shimon Peres, then President of Israel, with Clinark producing the music in a pop/soul style.
In February 2015, Clinark released the mini-album “The Solution” on the Famous Records label. The title track, a conscious reggae piece, echoed the themes of “Babylon City” and “No More War,” calling for global change. The mini-album also included the lovers rock track “What You Gonna Do?” (on the “Unification Riddim”) and a reworked version of his Michael Jackson tribute song, “Happy Birthday Today.”
