The Turtle Who Ate A Balloon – Andrew Stevenson & Peter Woolcock

The story of how The Turtle who ate a Balloon, is rescued by a baby humpback whale, and helped by Spike the Barracuda, Darth Vader the Grouper and  the aquarists at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.  Even Mr BUTT the Bermuda Underwater Terrifying Troll gets involved when he calls for a Big Thing under his bridge at Flatts to discuss the problem. There’s excitement as the turtle is blown out to sea from the Aquarium after a hurricane. Disaster strikes again when the turtle is tangled in discarded fishing line. Only  Umbriago El Dragon from Castle Island can rescue the turtle!

A cautionary tale about the dangers posed to marine creatures, this children’s book based in Bermuda has an accompanying audio book read aloud by the author and the illustrator.

Bradford City FC – League Cup Final preps @wembleystadium

Feb 23, 2013. Bradford City’s players visit Wembley ahead of their League Cup final match against Swansea City.

The squad looked around the pitch and took photos of the stadium.

Bradford have beaten several Premier League teams to reach Sunday’s final, including Arsenal in the quarter-finals and Aston Villa over two legs in the semi-final.

They are the first fourth-tier team to reach the League Cup final since the 1960s.

Bermuda’s own Nahki Wells, with his appearance in the 2013 Football League Cup Final,  will become the first player from Bermuda to appear in an English major cup final.

League Cup final 2013: Bradford striker Nahki Wells targeting path to Premier League and ‘greatness’

There is a refreshing charm to Nahki Wells. Bradford City’s Bermudan forward speaks wistfully of being “destined for greatness” and wanting to play alongside Wayne Rooney before admitting a more prosaic dream: matching the achievements of Shaun Goater. read full article

@Chewsticks #Beachfest Emancipation Celebration 2012 @ #HorseshoeBay #Bermuda

Historically, Emancipation celebrations have been centered around the Annual Cup Match Cricket Classic event, beginning on Thursday and ending on Friday. The game has traditionally been flanked by concert events and other activities in the evenings. The first day of Cup Match has always been the slow day at the Cup Match Cricket Classic game with many people choosing to spend the day outside with family and friends. A conversation with the Hon. CV “Jim” Woolridge – The Voice Behind Bermuda Cricket

There’s nothing like a day at the ballpark. Or in Bermuda’s case, a day at the cricket field. This civilized British sport, which has been the national pastime since 1844, qualified Bermuda for the World Cup in 2007.

Each year cricket fever takes over the island for the two-day Cup Match, a fierce battle between the two leading clubs. Shops are closed, personal days are called in and nearly everyone on the island watches rival batsmen and bowlers duke it out in their pristinely starched whites.

Advice for Visitors

From April through September you’ll be able to take in a weekend match at various pitches around town with a bit more elbow room, but no less enthusiasm. (For most Bermudans, cricket remains their first unrivaled love.) Plan on arriving early and be prepared for a festive all-day affair. The host grounds have a special section reserved for visitors and provide complimentary cricket guides for first-time spectators. Feel free to ask questions and be prepared to walk away a cricket expert.

It’s standard for locals to stake out a position in advance, bringing with them picnics, drinks and even music. Bigger matches are always a good excuse for a mini-holiday, where socializing over mussel pies and delicious rum swizzles (in lieu of peanuts and Cracker Jacks) makes for a street party-style atmosphere.
