Emirates Team New Zealand celebrate after their 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup final CREDIT: AP

by Miles Dilworth

26 JUNE 2017 • 9:30PM

“In the end it was a walkover. New Zealand routed the USA 7-1 to win the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.
Trouble is, did anyone notice?

Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR challenge did its best to milk the untapped British market, but came up short. The Kiwis were preaching to the converted, while moneybags Oracle Team USA had their campaign end in humiliation and a dwindling American audience.

The Cup can be impenetrable at times. Adorned with corporate sponsorship, to the sceptic it is little more than a billionaire’s plaything …”

Emirates Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup by a score of 7 to 1 and will defend the Auld Mug in the 36th America’s Cup. It was Oracle’s second defense of the Cup, four years after its first successful defense.

The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America’s Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the World Series. read more @ wikipedia

BBC Americas Cup Final Bermuda 2017 – Play Offs, Day 1-3

#Bermuda job losses during @AmericasCup @NewshubNZ

The America’s Cup was means to be a boost for Bermuda’s economy but workers at the event’s official hotel have been told there’s not enough work for them because it’s not full.

The country may be a playground for the rich and famous – but everyday Bermudians fear the benefit from hosting the Cup will not be the plan that was sold to them.

Living along the turquoise shores of Bermuda comes at a cost – just renting an average two-bedroom home is $3500 a month. For those that struggle to afford that, the America’s Cup was touted as the economic boost they’d benefit from. But those in state-subsidised housing near the Cup village would have to move elsewhere to make way for hotels – hotels that were never built … read full article & watch video @newshubnz

@AmericasCup #Bermuda Turtle Dilemma @bestbermuda

The removal of sea turtles from Bermuda’s waters ahead of the upcoming America’s Cup raises serious “ethical dilemmas”, admit the country’s leading environmental groups.

In preparation for a period of intense “marine traffic”, caused by the arrival of a fleet of 50-foot catamarans for the upcoming America’s Cup, various local authorities are temporarily relocating the growing number of sea turtles that inhabit Bermuda’s near-shore waters.

The Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce (BEST), however, has warned that …

Why houses in #Bermuda have white stepped roofs @BBCNews

92849627_b62j89

“The North Atlantic island of Bermuda has no fresh-water springs, rivers or lakes. So how did humans ever settle there? The secret is in the design of their houses, and particularly the white stepped roof which is still in use 400 years after it was first introduced.

A British visitor to Bermuda will feel instantly at home, even if the weather is far warmer and sunnier than anything imaginable on the British Isles. Many of the island’s 60,000 residents live in limestone cottages painted in pastel colours of a design familiar from British towns or villages.

But white roofs? With steps? Where did they come from? It turns out they are designed this way to harvest rain. The steps slow down heavy rainfall helping the gutters to collect the water and store it in a tank under the house …”

#Bermuda walkers asked to stop stacking rocks @BBCNews

92885116_rockpile2

Nature experts in Bermuda have urged people to stop prising rocks from the ground to make artfully arranged piles as it’s disturbing the habitat of a critically endangered lizard. Conservationists say rock stacking – also called rock or stone balancing – is an increasing problem in the Spittal Pond Nature Reserve. It’s one of the last remaining homes of the rare Bermuda skink which lives among the rocks. The reserve is a “crucial habitat for its future on the island”, according to Andrew Dobson, president of the Bermuda Audubon Society.

66 hours #Bermuda #NewYork in the World’s 1st Off-Shore Catamaran @RedBull

In early November, four thrill-seeking sailors navigated 660 miles from New York to Bermuda in just 66 hours. They were not traveling in luxury aboard a heavy-duty boat, with creature comforts and the ample horsepower required for most open-ocean voyages. These daredevils relied on a foiling boat—those small, blazingly fast seacraft usually seen flying along coastlines. Sailing this things across open water was once too dangerous to even attempt. Now it’s possible thanks to reengineering how these boats work and what they’re made from.

The Most Polite People In The World Are In #Bermuda ! @buzzbishop

“Hello, how are you?,” the border official at the airport security greeted us. We thought she was just being friendly, that our faces exhausted from the long night of travel to the island needed a little pick me up.

We soon found out she wasn’t being particularly polite to just us, but that everyone in Bermuda is polite. “Hello, how are you?” is not just a platitude that rolls out in every greeting, but a genuine wish shared between islanders.

If you think Canadians are polite, you haven’t been to Bermuda!

“Hello, how are you?,” the woman greeted the …
