How a Long-Lost Perfume Got a 2nd Life After 150 Years Underwater in #Bermuda @AtlasObscura

A team of divers and archaeologists discovered the 19th-century fragrance in a shipwreck off the coast of Bermuda!
BY LINA ZELDOVICH JUNE 30, 2020

AFTER AN INTENSE STORM PUMMELED Bermuda in February 2011, the island’s custodian of historic wrecks Philippe Max Rouja went to do a coastal survey and spotted a partially exposed bow of a boat. The bow belonged to the Civil War blockade runner Mary Celestia, which was en route to North Carolina’s Confederate forces when it sank in 1864.

The Mary Celestia is far from alone: Bermuda’s treacherous underwater reefs sank many a ship. In fact, over 300 vessels are buried around the island, each with its own history and artifacts. But this isn’t the story of the wreck itself—this is a story about a whiff of lost perfume history hiding within.

After a week of examining the wreck, a team of divers and archaeologists found a number of artifacts, including shoes, wine, and two small bottles of perfume. The items were packed together, leading the team to think they may have been gifts. Save for some mineral deposits that had formed on them, the bottles appeared to be intact. One still contained a small air bubble inside, which otherwise would have been forced out by seawater. Etched on the glass were the names “Piesse and Lubin London.”

Rouja brought the bottles to Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, the owner of a local boutique perfume store called Lili Bermuda. Ramsay-Brackstone immediately knew they were a rare find. “In the 1800s, London was a …

#SmallButMighty #BERMUDA Plan to Emulate Iceland’s #WorldCup Run

The island has a population of a little over 65,000 but with an expanded World Cup in 2026, qualification for the tournament is not out of the question!

Bermuda, with a population of just over 65,000, will be the smallest nation outside of Oceania to ever compete in a senior men’s Confederation championship. That figure is smaller than combined capacities of the three stadiums it will play in during the group stage. Though the country has less than one-fifth the population of Iceland, Bermudan FA resident Mark Wade said he thinks the program can follow in Iceland’s footsteps and use the Gold Cup as a starting point for an eventual berth in the World Cup.

11 #BestBars in #Bermuda : #TopSpots 4A Drink #AnyTimeofDay ! @CNTraveler

Sure, you can (and should) get a mean Dark n’ Stormy—but don’t miss out on world-class wines and locally brewed suds.

Bermuda’s love affair with drinking has long been connected to its most heavily imbibed spirit—a molasses-colored rum known as Gosling’s Black Seal, which was first blended in the 1850s by the sons of an English wine merchant named William Gosling. Today, it’s the key ingredient in Bermuda’s two national cocktails—the Dark n’ Stormy and the Rum Swizzle—both of which are proudly served in every bar and restaurant on the island. And while Bermuda has a handful of upscale wine bars and craft cocktail lounges where a potent rum drink should be an afterthought, don’t make a trip to this pink sand paradise without downing a bit of the Black.

Here, a collection of our favorite bars in Bermuda …

The History of The Sea Venture

Sea Venture was a seventeenth-century English sailing ship, part of the Third Supply mission to the Jamestown Colony, that was wrecked in Bermuda in 1609.

She was the 300 ton purpose-built flagship of the London Company and a highly unusual vessel for her day, given that she was the first single timbered, merchantman built in England, and also the first dedicated emigration ship. Sea Ventures wreck is widely thought to have been the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play The Tempest …

==========================================
27 July 1609 – Wreck of the Sea Venture

Stephen HOPKINS was the only Mayflower passenger who had previously been to the New World. His adventures included surviving a the Sea Venture’s 1609 shipwreck [ including being pardoned for mutiny!]  in Bermuda and working from 1610–14 in Jamestown as well as knowing the legendary Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a fellow Bermuda castaway. Some Shakespearean scholars believe he was the model for the rogue Stephano in the Tempest.

On Jun  2 1609, the Sea Venture, under the command of Sir George Somers, admiral of the fleet, with Christopher Newport as captain and Sir Thomas Gates, Governor of the colony, departed from Plymouth, England followed by the rest of the Virginia Company’s fleet, the Falcon,Diamond, Swallow, Unity, Blessing, Lion, and two smaller ships.

Hodges writes,

“For seven weeks the ships stayed within sight of each other, often within earshot, and captains called to one another by way of trumpets. On the Sea Venture all was peaceful. Morning and evening, Chaplain Buck and Clerk Hopkins gathered the passengers and crew on deck for prayers and the singing of a psalm.”

The ships were only eight days from the coast of Virginia, when they were suddenly caught in a hurricane, and the Sea Venture became separated from the rest of the fleet …

Swept Away: Our First Time in #Bermuda @gloriaschramm1

By Gloria Schramm

I first visited this surreal island with hubby back in 1992, and although I continued returning each year, I couldn’t write about it because what could I possibly say about it that wasn’t already said?

Who would want to hear about the utter, breathtaking beauty that has almost become clichéd? No one would want to read about the Windex-looking ocean; the pink coral bits of sand pretty enough to bottle and sell; the chirping Yellowbirds and bleeping frogs; the cavernous cave and Zoo? It’s all been written about before.

Artists have come and done it justice. Mark Twain’s favorite place was Bermuda and John Lennon visited and wrote songs there. John discovered the freesia flower and named his Double Fantasy album, inspired by his stay in Bermuda. Today there is a monument to him in the Bermuda Botanical Gardens by Bermudian artist, Graham Foster  recently unveiled in 2012. I hope to see it on my next return trip.

What of the friendly people like Johnny Barnes who greets traffic every morning and has done so for years, as visible and iconic as Bermuda’s longtails?

People like the friendly taxi driver who showed us the off-the-beaten path of Heydon Trust on our way back to our ship the first time and where we went inside the old, tiny slave church and climbed a little hill overlooking a sweeping panorama captured by painters long before we got there?

bermuda-cottage-gloria-schramm-e1530258480307.png

As a kid and long before I knew about Bermuda, I dreamt of an island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with magical, fairy-tale looking houses and lots of greenery and where the weather was always sunny. Bermuda must have been in the recesses of my imagination or subconscious all along, but who knows where or when before, like the song? I wrote a composition for 5th grade about my imaginary travels with Marco Polo. Hmmm….

Anyway, let me say what has probably been said before, that Bermuda is a picture postcard in all directions, whichever way you look, forward, up, sideways, to the left or right or down. It is a classy, stately place with a solid infrastructure. Other islands have only segments of beauty by design or assigned by man – usually – not all – by contrived resorts created to give you that simulated “island feel” but in Bermuda you get that everywhere, naturally occurring, from Mangrove Bay to St. George’s and back again, north shore, south shore…Pembroke, Sandy’s; Devonshire; Paget and oh, so many more.

I know that the more praise and publicity Bermuda gets, that there is a chance that more people will find out about it and it could become crowded and overrun, but it’s not a place to hide away under a bushel! It has its own light and that light shines like a beacon all alone in the middle of the big ocean. And when I am there, I feel alive and as if all is well in the world. And when I leave, I cry.

I’d like to think that in some small way I’ve added to the legions of artists and writers through the ages who’ve sung Bermuda’s praises in their works.

The Insidious #PlasticProblem by #Bermuda Blue @jfd2205 @PlasticPollutes @Bermuda #PlasticPollution

19278-200While those behind the current road safety campaign, the RG and Piece of the Rock, are to be congratulated there is another insidious problem that has not really been talked about, let alone addressed.

The figures in this story should shock any right-thinking man, woman or child – unfortunately they won’t.

Bermuda’s overall mentality is not geared towards the environment. It is a throw-away society where the first thought is “to get rid of” rather than “to mend” …

271-200The figures are absolutely shocking!
